FC Zurich draw FC Basel 1:1
This afternoon’s Super League game between FC Zurich and FC Basel at the Letzigrund Stadium has ended in a 1-1 draw.
FC Zurich had their first two promising scoring opportunities after just eight minutes when Alain Nef’s header following a corner-kick was blocked by a defender. And just a few seconds later, Stephen Odey aimed his header too high and sent the ball over the crossbar.
FC Basel, on the other hand, made use of their very first opportunity of the afternoon to take the lead when Samuele Campo scored the 1-0 for the visitors in the 39th minute; Taulant Xhaka had provided the assist. FC Zurich were able to show an immediate reaction to this deficit, but unfortunately, a shot by Stephen Odey was cleared off the line by FC Basel’s Eray Cömert.
After the half-time break, the home side from Zurich kept on pushing for the equalizer and had several more chances. First, Winter’s powerful shot from just a few meters was saved by Basel keeper Martin Hansen. And just one minute later, the ball bounced off the outside off the post following a shot from around 18 meters by Zurich defender Umaru Bangura.
A nice attack by FC Zurich in the 67th minute was then almost crowned by success as Odey scored the supposed equalizer – but the referee disallowed the goal on account of an alleged offside position by Zurich’s Nigerian striker; a very controversial decision. Fortunately, though, Pa Modou was able to head the ball into the Basel net in the 76th minute to put FC Zurich 1-1 level and earn the home side a well-deserved point.
Next Saturday evening, 1 September 2018, FC Zurich will be facing FC Lugano away at the Stadio Cornaredo (kick-off 7pm).
