FC Zurich suffer 0-1 defeat against Bayer 04 Leverkusen
FC Zurich have lost their away game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen 0-1 tonight.
Both teams had a rather slow start to tonight’s game and Bayer 04 Leverkusen only had their first good scoring opportunity in the 29th minute, but the shot by Dominik Kohr from the edge of the penalty area was off target and the ball whizzed past the post. FC Zurich, on the other hand, focused their efforts on their defense and intended to surprise their opponents with fast counterattacks; however, they hardly managed to create any dangerous opportunities.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen also had the next chance of the game when Lucas Alario appeared alone in front of Yanick Brecher – but luckily enough, the FC Zurich keeper was able to save his shot with his foot.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen were also the more dangerous side after the half-time break and ultimately took the lead in the 60th minute when Tin Jedvaj headed home a corner to put Leverkusen 1-0 in front. Just one minute later, FC Zurich nearly got the equalizer, but Kevin Rüegg didn’t find the back of the net as his shot went past the post.
The home side had a couple more chances by Leon Bailey and Paulinho to increase their lead, but these were left unused. FC Zurich were unable to react to the deficit, though, and the score remained unchanged 1-0 for Bayer 04 Leverkusen until the final whistle.
In spite of this defeat, FC Zurich are through to the round of 32 of the UEFA Europa League after four rounds thanks to tonight’s 0-0 draw between PFC Ludogorets 1945 and AEK Larnaca FC.
Next Sunday afternoon, 11 November 2018, FC Zurich will be hosting FC Sion at the Letzigrund Stadium (kick-off 4pm).
