FC Zurich suffer 2:3 defeat against FC St Gallen
FC Zurich have lost their away game against FC St Gallen 2:3 this afternoon. 17-year-old midfielder Simon Sohm was brought on in the 91st minute and made his Super League debut.
The game started with a bang as after just two and a half minutes, FC St Gallen striker Roman Buess deflected the ball onto the crossbar of the FC Zurich goal. The visitors had their first promising scoring opportunity on 22 minutes through Antonio Marchesano, whose shot just whizzed past the right post. In the 33rd minute, FC Zurich had their next chance to open the score, but keeper Dejan Stojanovic was able to keep out a shot by Stephen Odey. About ten minutes later, Vincent Sierro then scored the 1:0 for FC St Gallen with a shot from around 20 meters.
FC Zurich nearly equalized still before the half-time break, but unfortunately both Salim Khelifi and Toni Domgjoni were unable to put the ball into the back of the net. Instead, the hosts doubled their lead to 2:0 in the 51st minute, as Ashimeru poked the ball over the line.
FC Zurich kept on pushing for their first goal and these efforts were finally rewarded in the 68th minute when Kololli scored the 1:2. But when Barnetta put the score to 3:1 for FC St Gallen with a header in the 86th minute, the game was more or less decided. FC Zurich managed to reduce their deficit again to 2:3 thanks to Odey's goal in the 94th minute, but this result remained unchanged until the final whistle.
Next Wednesday evening, 31 October 2018, FC Zurich will be facing FC Red Star Zurich away in the round of 16 of the Helvetia Swiss Cup (kick-off 8pm).
