FC Zurich suffer 0:1 defeat against FC Lugano
FC Zurich have lost their away game against FC Lugano 0:1 tonight.
The opening minutes of tonight’s game were evenly balanced and both teams concentrated their efforts on the defense. But six minutes in, Toni Domgjoni had the first promising opportunity for the visitors; his shot was aimed too high, though, and the ball flew over the goal of Lugano keeper Noam Baumann.
The home side also had several chances to open the score: First, a powerful shot by Dragan Mihajlovic was saved by FC Zurich keeper Yanick Brecher (31st minute). Then, both Domen Crnigoj (34th minute) and Alexander Gerndt (40th minute) gave away further good opportunities for the home team. However, FC Lugano then still took the lead still during the first half when new signing Covilo scored the 1:0.
In the 54th minute, Stephen Odey almost equalized the score but unfortunately, his shot was deflected and the ball just whizzed past the post. In the 63rd minute, it was again Odey who did not manage to deflect the ball towards the Lugano goal following a cross by Khelifi. And only four minutes later, keeper Baumann kept out a header by Alain Nef.
Despite their obvious superiority throughout the second forty-five minutes, FC Zurich did not succeed in scoring the equalizer during the final minutes of tonight’s game and suffered a narrow 0:1 defeat.
On Saturday, 15 September 2018, FC Zurich will be facing FC Breitenrain away in the Helvetia Swiss Cup (kick-off 7pm).
