Goalless draw between FC Zurich and Neuchâtel Xamax
The Super League game between FC Zurich and Neuchâtel Xamax has ended in a goalless draw this afternoon.
FC Zurich took control of the game from kick-off, dominated their opponents during the opening minutes, and had their first promising opportunity with just five minutes gone – however, both Stephen Odey and Adrian Winter couldn’t get a foot on a cross by Pa Modou that flew through the box. In the 20th minute, the visitors from Neuchâtel also had a good chance after a quick counterattack, but the shot by Max Veloso from about five meters was off target and the ball whizzed past the post.
Until the half-time whistle, FC Zurich then had another couple of good opportunities by Toni Domgjoni (two shots in the 29th minute), Antonio Marchesano (shot just wide in the 41st minute), and Alain Nef (long-distance shot from around 25 meters in the 43rd minute).
After the break, the home side kept on pushing for the opening goal – and they certainly did create some clear-cut chances: With three minutes gone in the second half, Neuchâtel Xamax keeper Laurent Walthert saved a shot by Marchesano with his fingertips and in the 56th minute, the Xamax keeper kept out a shot by Stephen Odey. Subsequently, Rüegg (shot on the turn (83rd minute)), Khelifi all alone in front of keeper Walthert (84th minute), and Marchesano following a pass by Roberto Rodriguez (85th minute) didn’t manage to find the back of the Xamax net. Consequently, the score remained goalless until the final whistle.
Next Thursday evening, 4 October 2018, FC Zurich will be hosting PFC Ludogorets 1945 in their first home game of this year’s UEFA Europa League campaign (kick-off 6.55pm).
