FC Zurich draw local rivals Grasshopper Club 1-1
The 270th Zurich derby between FC Zurich and local rivals Grasshopper Club at the Letzigrund Stadium has ended in a 1-1 draw tonight.
Neither of the two teams showed up in front of their opponent’s goal too often during the opening minutes of the game and they didn’t succeed in creating any scoring opportunities. It was only in the 12th minute that FC Zurich had their first chance when a header by Michael Frey following a cross by Adrian Winter was aimed too high and flew over the crossbar. From now on and until the end of the first half, the home side was more or less in control of the action on the pitch and 27 minutes in, a deep through ball by Antonio Marchesano found Ghanaian striker Raphael Dwamena, who beat Lindner in the Grasshopper Club goal to put FC Zurich 1-0 in front. The team of head coach Ludovic Magnin then tried to increase their lead – however, they didn’t have any clear-cut opportunities.
The visitors got into the game better after the half-time break and came close to the equalizer several times. Ultimately, Kodro equalized the score 1-1 in the 59th minute. FC Zurich didn’t give in and tried to show an immediate reaction, but the score remained 1-1 since Dwamena missed his two promising chances.
In injury time, it was then Grasshopper Club who almost scored the winning goal through Kodro, but fortunately, FC Zurich keeper Yanick Brecher managed to keep out these two shots, saving his team the draw and the one point tonight.
Next Wednesday evening, 11 April 2018, FC Zurich will be facing FC Basel away (kick-off 6.45pm).
