FC Zurich draw FC Lucerne 1-1
This afternoon’s game between FC Zurich and FC Lucerne at the Letzigrund Stadium has ended in a 1-1 draw.
FC Zurich got off to an excellent start to the game as after just eight minutes, Salim Khelifi opened the score from a direct free kick to put the home side 1-0 in front. A few moments later, the visitors from Lucerne also had their first opportunity of the afternoon, but a shot by Pascal Schürpf was narrowly off target and the ball whizzed past the Zurich goal.
As the match progressed, FC Zurich’s players pulled back in their own defense and focused their efforts on quick counterattacks. After the fast-paced opening minutes, the game’s intensity ultimately decreased and, as a result, the spectators at the Letzigrund Stadium only got to witness very few scenes in the penalty area on both sides of the pitch. In the 36th minute, Ruben Vargas tried to beat Yanick Brecher with a low shot, but the FC Zurich keeper got his hands on the ball to save this shot and keep his goal clear for the time being.
Throughout the second half, both teams created just a few scoring opportunities for themselves. Unfortunately, FC Lucerne still managed to equalize the score 1-1 in the 80th minute: Following a corner kick by Christian Schneuwly, Lucas Alves headed home the ball to earn his team a point. And just five minutes later, Vargas almost scored the winner for FC Lucerne, but he missed the goal by a few inches and the ball flew past the left post (85th minute).
Next Thursday evening, 28 February 2019, FC Zurich will be hosting Challenge League side SC Kriens in the Swiss Cup quarter-final at the Letzigrund Stadium (kick-off 8.15pm).
