FC Zurich suffer 1:3 defeat against SSC Naples
FC Zurich have lost their Europa League round of 32 first-leg game against SSC Naples 1:3 tonight.
Already in the 11th minute of tonight’s clash with SSC Naples, the visitors took advantage of a blunder in the Zurich defense: Arkadiusz Milik took possession of the ball and played a clever pass to Lorenzo Insigne, who opened the score with the 1:0 for the visitors from Italy.
Kololli then had the first chance for the home team, but his shot was just wide and the ball whizzed past the right post (19th minute). So instead of the equalizer for FC Zurich, Callejón doubled SSC Naples’ advantage to 2:0 in the 21st minute.
Although FC Zurich had some promising scoring opportunities, they were not able to find their way through a very well-organized Naples defense. Therefore, until the half-time break, the visitors had the better chances by Zielinski (33rd minute) and Kalidou Koulibaly (45th minute), who did not find the back of the net with their headers. Zielinski was more successful in the 77 th minute as he scored the 3:0 for the visitors with a shot in the near corner.
In the 83rd minute, FC Zurich were able to reduce their deficit to 1:3: After a handball in the box, Kololli had no trouble converting the penalty given. In injury time, a volley from around 16 yards by Kryeziu hit the crossbar and Naples keeper Meret managed to save Khelifi's rebound. Consequently, the score remained 1:3 until the final whistle.
Next Sunday afternoon, 17 February 2019, FC Zurich will be facing Young Boys Berne away (kick-off 4pm).
