FC Zurich suffer 0-2 defeat against FC Basel
FC Zurich have lost their home game against FC Basel at the Letzigrund Stadium 0-2 tonight.
The visitors made the better start to the game and had two promising scoring opportunities already in the first five minutes of the match by Noah Okafor (3rd minute) and Ricky van Wolfswinkel (5th minute). FC Zurich had their first opportunity in the 14th minute through Salim Khelifi, but his deflected shot was slightly off target and the ball whizzed narrowly past the post.
After the half-time break, the home team had the first dangerous scene in the penalty area: Khelifi’s pass found Assan Ceesay, but the latter’s shot was blocked by Basel keeper Jonas Omlin (53rd minute). With just about their very next attack on the Zurich goal, FC Basel then opened the score and took the 1-0 lead as Samuele Campo beat Zurich’s goalkeeper with a lob (54th minute).
FC Zurich tried to react immediately to this deficit and got very close to the equalizer when Sertic's corner-kick bounced off the outside of the post. Unfortunately, the home side did not manage to score any goals until the final whistle and just before the end of normal time, it was then Ajeti who scored the 2-0 and decided tonight’s game in favor of the visitors.
Next Saturday evening, 6 April 2019, FC Zurich will be facing local rivals Grasshopper Club away in the 274th Zurich derby (kick-off 7pm).
