FC Zurich suffer 0-3 defeat against FC Basel
FC Zurich have lost their away game against FC Basel 0-3 tonight.
Both teams got off to a relatively slow start to the game until, in the 18th minute, FC Zurich had their first promising scoring opportunity of the evening: Marco Schönbächler took advantage of an insufficient clearance by defender Blas Riveros, but he did not find the back of the net as his curled shot hit the left outer post. And just one minute later, Basel keeper Jonas Omlin managed to keep out a low shot from Zurich striker Assan Ceesay.
FC Basel had several more good opportunities throughout the first half, but fortunately for FC Zurich, they could not make use of any of them. However, shortly after the half-time break, the home side nonetheless took the 1-0 lead following a corner when Carlos Zambrano headed the ball into the Zurich goal to put his side in front.
FC Basel were now in full control of the action on the pitch, ultimately deciding the game when van Wolfswinkel doubled his team’s lead to 2-0 in the 66th minute. And the Basel players even had plenty of more chances to score further goals, namely through Edon Zhegrova (78th minute) and van Wolfswinkel (83rd minute). In injury time, Albian Ajeti then put the final score to 3-0 for the home team (92nd minute).
Next Saturday evening, 11 May 2019, FC Zurich will be facing Neuchâtel Xamax FCS away (kick-off 7pm).
